Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged attack on party’s MP Mahua Moitra. He questioned the West Bengal Police’s response, alleging that its silence despite a recent direction from the Calcutta High Court raised “serious questions.”

In a post on social media platform X, Banerjee referred to the recent High Court direction to the Director General of Police to ensure appropriate safeguards and criticised what he described as police inaction following the incident.
“I strongly condemn the attack on MP Mahua Moitra. The silence of the WB Police, despite the High Court’s recent direction to the DGP to ensure appropriate safeguards, raises serious questions,” Banerjee said.

He also took a swipe at the situation by asking, “Is this what PORIBARTAN was meant to look like?”

Backing his party colleague, Banerjee said that targeting an elected representative for refusing to yield to pressure reflected weakness rather than strength.
“When an elected representative is heckled simply because she refuses to bend, it is not an expression of strength. It is an admission of insecurity and cowardice,” he said.
Issuing a broader political warning, the TMC leader said those supporting such actions should not assume that political power was permanent.

“Don’t mistake today’s political power for permanent immunity. Every abuse of authority leaves a mark and every act of intimidation is remembered. The tide of politics changes faster than many expect,” Banerjee said.
The remarks came after an alleged attack on Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra, with the Trinamool Congress accusing political opponents of intimidation. The incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation in West Bengal, with the TMC alleging a failure by authorities to ensure the safety of its elected representatives.
